Poker is now a very popular card game and is known throughout the world. The necessary materials to play this game are cards, a table and poker chips. The origin of the first two materials is nothing new to us, but little is known about poker chips. Nobody really pays much attention to poker chips because they are too into the game. However, for those wondering about the origin of poker chips and their purpose in the game, here is a quick run down on them. Chips were made for the purpose of gambling and keeping track of the winnings. They are commonly made out plastic, composite, or clay. Clay chips are the oldest one among these chips and have been manufactured since the 1800s.

During the 1800s, poker players simply used anything small and valuable as their bet in poker games. Initially they used gold pieces as a form of wager. It was then later generalized to the use of poker chips made out of clay in order to have common standards in the bets made in poker. Over the years of existence these chips were improved and are now more usable during poker games. The use of plastic poker chips started in the 1940s because of the demand of a lighter chip that can be stacked together neatly. In the current times, a poker game is not complete without these chips. They are now regarded as the standard currency in the poker gaming industry, no matter what country you’re from.
